Superwoman is REAL
SUPERWOMAN

Growing up, one of my favourite things to do was to binge on Saturday morning comics while snugged up in the biggest blanket in the world,on the sofest couch known to man kind. Aside from the bright colours and the crazy action, what I loved the most was how the good characters always came out on top and never let their circumstances define them. When life slowly made an entrance, and you are forced to put fictional characters in your back pocket but soon, you realise that the people around you all share similar traits and values as your favourite characters. Comics were only comics, superheroes were only superheros , all made up and pretend, until I met superwoman, in real life.
Unfortunately, she didn't wear a cape. She didn't wear a slim corset that wrapped her figure. She didn't possess the powers to lift people into mid air, or fly through the sky. She didn't work along side superman and other fictional characters. But the powers that she possessed was something from out of this earth, out of this world, God given powers.
Superwoman did things like brushed my hair and braided it to keep it out of my face when I was younger. When I was even younger than that, she would go to the ends of the earth to make sure that I had what I needed, when I needed it. When I was even younger than young, through her cut flesh, she gave birth to me, losing her life for moments to ensure that I had mine for almost eternity. Superwoman didn't fly through the skies to save the world but she flew between jobs in New Zealand just to make sure that I had a pretty white dress for white Sunday. This superwoman couldn't make me float high in the sky but her pride sat on shoulder, lifting me higher than the furthest cloud. Superwoman. She wakes up on time in order to wake everyone else up on time. She made sure that we had fresh clothes for the next day. She made sure there wasn't a night were we went to bed hungry. Superwoman. Did the most when it felt like we had the least.
I finally knew that I had something better than a superhero, the night I presented the broken pieces of my heart to her, and she held me long enough to remind me that love is still alive. My superwoman cried when I cried, she smiled when I smiled, and laughed when I laughed. My Superwoman proved to me that the same strong female blood that ran from her grandmother, to her mother, also ran through her and down to me.
I was entrapped by the idea that superwoman was only existent in movies, animations and tv shows when in reality I had superwoman in my life the entire time. Crazy huh? Those younger years, I failed to see her as superwoman but saw her more as just my birth giver. Naïve I know !
Many people look up to superheros, artists, musicians, actresses and actors but none of them will ever compare to my superwoman. She taught me to be brave, to always speak my mind when necessary, to do good, to provide for those who need, to pray for those who need prayer, to offer a helping hand where I could. Superwoman. She doesn't wear a cape, or wear a slim fit corset. She doesn't have the powers to levitate or make people fly into the sky. She doesn't have to have the most money in the world, or drive the best cars. She proved to me that she didn't need a man in order to live a happy life, and that they were just luxuries and not necessities.
Superwoman. I know that you reading this also have a superwoman in your life, and she doesn't always have to be a "she", maybe its a superman. Don't be too busy and caught up in life to remember the sacrifices that your superwomen made for you.

My cousins see her as aunty.
Her old drug dealer friends see her as Toeaina.
My Aunties see her as Sister in law.
Her family sees her as Pele.
My church sees her as Karen.
My pastors see her as Sala.
Me, I see her as mum.
